When Leaders Lose Their Way | 1 Samuel 28-29 | Brent Smith

1 Samuel 28-29 highlights the stark contrast between Saul’s desperate rebellion and David’s protection by God. Fearful of the Philistines, Saul breaks his own law to consult a medium at Endor, where Samuel’s spirit predicts Saul’s death and defeat. Meanwhile, Philistine commanders distrust David, forcing him to return to Ziklag instead of fighting against Israel.

From Victory to Vulnerability | 1 Samuel 26 & 27 | Brent Smith

In 1 Samuel 26 and 27, David spares King Saul’s life a second time, refusing to harm “the Lord’s anointed” despite having the opportunity, leading Saul to temporarily cease his pursuit. Weary, David then flees to live among the Philistines in Gath for safety, deceiving their king while secretly raiding other nations.

Waiting On God When You’re Wronged | 1 Samuel 24 and 25 | Brent Smith

You’ll remember at the end of chapter 23, Saul was hunting David and was nearly ready to catch him, but God sent the Philistines to invade the land and distract Saul. Saul left David to deal with the Philistines. It was all the sovereign work of the Lord. And in Chapter 24 we see God’s sovereignty at work again. Once Saul had dealt with the Philistines, he was told that David was in the Wilderness of En Gedi.

On The Run But Not Alone | 1 Samuel 22-23 | Brent Smith

We left off with David on the run from Saul. This is a period of time where David is going to be tested greatly. He’s been anointed king already, but it will be approximately 15 years between his anointing and his ascension to the throne. But they’re not wasted years. They’re years that God is preparing and teaching David many things that will be of value for David leading a nation as their King. We’ll see in our study today…

Between The Promise and The Throne | 1 Samuel 20 & 21 | Brent Smith

This period of time that we’re looking at in David’s life is a difficult time. It’s one where he is on the run from Saul often. David began as a shepherd, and now he’s a fugitive. And it’s going to be this way for a number of years. From the time that David was anointed by Samuel at Jesse’s house until he actually takes the throne, will be about 15 years. David may have wondered what’s taking so long.God have…

Leading by Spears or by Spirit? | 1 Samuel 18 & 19 | Brent Smith

David begins to be publicly praised for his heroism and good character, while Saul grows jealous of David’s accolades. It leads to Saul’s attempts to take David’s life. It highlights the struggles of faith against the backdrop of adversity and the necessity of relying on God when friends or leaders become threats.

David Anointed King | 1 Samuel 16 | Randy Dyck

In 1 Samuel 16, God instructs the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king in Bethlehem, choosing one of Jesse’s sons. Samuel first mistakenly believes Jesse’s eldest son, Eliab, is the chosen one, but God reveals his choice is based on the heart, not appearance, rejecting Jesse’s first seven sons. Finally, David, the youngest son, is called in from the fields and anointed king, after which the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him. Simultaneously, a harmful spirit begins to…

The Selection of Saul: 1 Samuel 9-10 | Brent Smith

We left off last time with Israel demanding a king to rule over them, that they may be like all the other nations. They wanted a king to go out before them and fight their battles for them. This is not God’s will for them at this time, but He’s going to give them what they want, and it’s going to be to their detriment and judgment. In our study today we look at the selection of Israel’s first king.
